The death of Steve Jobs last week has brought a great deal of attention to his success as an entrepreneur with Apple, Pixar, and other projects. Whether or not you are a fan of Jobs or the products he helped to develop there is no denying the innovation and creativity he used when designing and promoting these products. The field of engineering thrives on both innovation and creativity - thinking outside of the box. The process of design thinking focuses a great deal on opening up one's mind to the endless possibilities that exist in solving life's dilemmas. The following are some of Jobs' great quotes regarding design and life in general.
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
"In most people's vocabularies, design means veneer. It's interior decorating. It's the fabric of the curtains or the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service."
While many may call Jobs a genius, it is more appropriate to call him human. Just a human being working to meet the needs of other human beings. Isn't that what we're all trying to accomplish?
The first annual M Day 5k/10k run on Saturday, September 24, 2011 proved to be quite enjoyable. With temperatures in the mid 70's runners began their journey.
Being M Day, runners followed the homecoming theme of Super Heroes and many showed up in costume. Both races began at Founders Park. The 5k ran around Memorial Pond and straight to campus where Rooted Souls, a favorite regional band, was playing. The overall male winner was Lucas Fried, 23, with a time of 16:17. Lucas is a first year grad student in civil engineering. The first female in a time of 24:45 was Rachel Noblitt, 21. She is also and student at the School of Mines and is majoring in pre med.
Many 10k runners from Saturday's race described the course as challenging but really fun. The first male crossing the line and sporting a cape and painted belly was Erik Vik, 19, who is majoring in civil engineering. His time was 44:16. Maria Luze, 21, was not only the first female that crossed the line for the 10k, she got engaged moments later. Her fiance, Erik Yeash, is a senior football player for the school. Maria's remak, "I am so happy that I don't know what to say." Maybe that makes up for her spill going down the hill.
As far as runs go, the race organizers are fortunate that everyone was safe and had a good time. While there were some small gaffes, next year's race plans to be bigger and better. Thank you all for coming out.
